How can we save energy at work?
Here are some suggestions we have discussed in the Initial Incentives office for keeping energy consumption down at work:
Don’t leave the lights on when you go home, it might look nice from the road or the car park, but it’s a waste of energy.
Switch items off at the plug, you’d be surprised how much electricity is being used when monitors and TV screens are left on standby every night and weekend.
Display screens - are they really necessary? Do they need to be on all day, every day to welcome visitors or display messages, could an email do the same job?
The temptation to fill the kettle and boil it to be nice for the next person, although coming from a place of kindness, is another waste of energy.
The dishwasher at work - is it always full when turned on? Maybe there’s a half-load or economy setting that might be helpful in reducing energy use?
Have you considered solar panels if your organisation owns the business?
Not necessarily energy saving, but better for the planet, is there a recycling bin next to the printer and are people using it, rather than putting paper in the bin?
Make sure kitchens have recycling bins, including food waste for all the tea bags and crusts that don’t get eaten from sandwiches!
