Leicester City Football Club (LCFC), a prominent Premier League team, is dedicated to making football inclusive and accessible for all fans. The club supports a diverse community through various teams, a podcast, an app, rewards schemes, and the LCFC Disabled Support Association.
LCFC aimed to enhance accessibility for fans with sensory processing challenges. They wanted to create sensory packs that include items to engage and stimulate different senses, providing a calming and therapeutic effect. Sensory packs are beneficial for individuals with sensory processing difficulties, anxiety, or stress, offering them a more enjoyable and manageable experience.
Initial Incentives partnered with LCFC to develop branded sensory packs suitable for use in the stadium’s sensory rooms and by the wider community. These packs included a variety of items designed to provide soothing tactile experiences and help with emotional regulation.
Sensory Pack Contents:
Drawstring Bag: For convenient storage of sensory items.
Ear Defenders: To minimise or cancel loud noises.
Pop Fidget: A tactile toy for fidgeting.
Tangle Toy: A toy for manipulating and fidgeting.
Fidget Spinner: For stress relief and concentration.
Mood Cards with Lanyard: To help communicate feelings non-verbally.
Stress Football: A stress ball shaped like a football.
The introduction of sensory packs significantly enhanced the matchday experience for fans with sensory processing challenges. These packs:
Provided Accessibility: Made football matches more enjoyable and accessible for children, adults, and families with sensory needs.
Promoted Relaxation: Offered soothing tactile experiences, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
Enhanced Focus: Helped both children and adults to maintain focus and concentration.
Aided Emotional Regulation: Served as therapeutic tools for emotional expression and regulation.
This initiative underscores LCFC’s commitment to inclusivity. The club has made substantial efforts to accommodate fans with sensory challenges, including creating sensory spaces and hosting sensory-friendly events. LCFC was the first Premier League club to conduct an autism-friendly environmental audit of their stadium, ensuring their facilities meet the needs of all fans.
